Time to Serve?

Did you know the Arcadia Police Department has a "Pay to Stay Inmate Program" as an alternative to staying in county jail? The program allows those persons convicted of a misdemeanor to serve time in the Arcadia City Jail instead of being housed at the county jail. The sentencing court must approve the arrangements and a commitment order must be obtained from the court prior to the application. For additional restrictions, application forms, fee or other information, visit the Pay to Stay page on the City website.

Weekly Tip - Child Seat Installation & Inspections

With the new child restraint laws impacting California parents earlier this year, we ran a post highlighting Safe Kids LA and their great tips on child restraint seats, as well as highlighting changes in the law.  Some parents may also need assistance in proper installation of child restraint seats or simply an inspection of the equipment and vehicle.  The California Highway Patrol offers this service to the community. Link to their website and locate the nearest CHP area office to call and schedule an appointment.

Proper installation and use of child restraint seats is not only important in keeping your child safe, but improper use may result in issuance of a citation should you be stopped.  Always make sure your child is properly belted or secured in a child restraint seat!

Weekly Tip - Parent's Guide to Internet Safety from the FBI

"Our children are our Nation's most valuable asset. They represent the bright future of our country and hold our hopes for a better Nation. Our children are also the most vulnerable members of society. Protecting our children against the fear of crime and from becoming victims of crime must be a national priority.

Unfortunately the same advances in computer and telecommunication technology that allow our children to reach out to new sources of knowledge and cultural experiences are also leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and harm by computer-sex offenders."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation offers parents an information packed Parent's Guide to Internet Safety.  The guide offers tips on watching for behavior changes or indications that a child may be the target of online predators.  Use the guide as a first step in becoming more aware of the dangers associated with online activity by our youth.  There are many great resources to be found by querying the topic.  Arm yourself with knowledge and be a part of your child's online life!

Weekly Tip - Megan's Law Database

The State of California maintains a public database enabling you to search for names of registered sex offenders and information about them.  You can also search by location, zip code, and some venues where children gather.  The Megan's Law database is updated regularly and it is best to check your area every so often for any new offenders.  The page has legal disclaimers and information you will need to review and agree to prior to conducting a search.

In addition to the Megan's Law information, the State website offers great advice and tips to parents on helping prevent our children from becoming victims of sexual assault.

"Inform children that it is wrong for adults to engage children in sexual activity.  Stress to your child that he or she should feel comfortable telling you anything, especially if it involves another adult. If your child does not feel comfortable being completely honest with you, then together you should find another trusted adult your child can talk to in confidence.  Make an effort to know the people with whom your child is spending time.  Knowledge is power. This is especially true for protecting children from sexual assault..."

Weekly Tip - Jan's Towing Detour Program

With the support of businesses like AAA and Jan's Towing in our community, there is no excuse for driving drunk or impaired.  The Automobile Club of Southern California has offered the Tipsy Tow program around the holidays for many years.  AAA's program is well known throughout Southern California.

Locally, Jan's Towing offers a similar program, known as the Don't Drive Drunk Detour Program, YEAR ROUND.  If you are in the local service area and have consumed too much alcohol, Jan's will tow your car and give you a ride home, within 7 miles.  For details on the program, give Jan's a call at 626-914-1841.
