January 1st traditionally brings new laws to California and this year was no exception. One law that has a direct impact on many of us is the change in requirements for child restraints in vehicles. Effective January 1, 2012, children under 8 years of age must be properly buckled in a car seat or booster seat, in the back seat of a vehicle. There is an "or" clause if the child has reached a height of 4'9".
Safe Kids Los Angeles County has an excellent website with safety tips for our children, and they offer a printable "parent tip sheet" on the new law. The tip sheet also gives an explanation of the term properly buckled. Parents should also consult the manufacturer and any car or booster seat for proper use and installation.
