Weekly Tip - Dangers of Deep Frying Your Turkey
Five dangers of deep frying a turkey:
- Turkey fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
- An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in, and a partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter when put in the pot.
- Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can cause a large fire.
- Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of starting a fire.
- The sides of the cooking pot, lid and pot handles can get dangerously hot.

Holiday DUI Enforcement Operations

Enforcement Operations Planned
Arcadia,
CA - Officers from the Arcadia Police Department’s Traffic Bureau will be
deploying to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in the
Department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign.
DUI Saturation Patrols will deploy on November 25, 2015 between the
hours of 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions
and/or arrests.
In
California, this deadly crime led to 867 deaths and over 23,000 serious
injuries in 2013 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Nationally, the latest data shows over 10,000
were killed by an impaired driver. Over the course of the past three years
officers have investigated 119 DUI collisions which has resulted in 76 people
being injured.
Recent
statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more
drugs in their systems. A study of
active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving
(14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent,
at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if
you’re taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking
even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment
affects.
Law Enforcement emphasizes the preventable
nature of drunk driving reminding everyone that all it takes is a little
planning ahead. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. But whatever you do,
don’t drink and drive.
The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile
app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. Launched
last year, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to “Map a
Spot” with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in
their area or a “List of Spots” to search all participating bars and
restaurants throughout California. Users will be offered free incentives at
each bar to celebrate their life saving role.
They can stay up-to-date with the latest from DDVIP and see what other
users are saying via its social tab. Also through the app, for those who want
to imbibe but also make it a point to plan ahead, users can easily order a
sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb – all from one screen.
The
cost of a ride home is cheap, nothing compared to a $10,000 DUI conviction and
the ‘inconvenience’ of not driving your own car home is nothing compared to the
inconvenience of spending time behind bars.
Funding for this DUI operation is provided to the
Arcadia Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic
Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding
everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1.

APD Records Section Closed for Thanksgiving
The Records Section of the Arcadia Police Department will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2015. The Records Section will reopen at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, November 27, 2015.
The lobby will be accessible for emergency assistance and weekend parking permits from the Topek machine. We will NOT be citing for Overnight Parking on Thanksgiving night. A parking permit is not required Thursday night to Friday morning, November 26-27, 2015. Overnight Parking Enforcement will resume on Friday night and permits will be required.

ROAD CLOSURES - 62nd Annual Festival of Bands
On Saturday, November 21, 2015, the City of Arcadia is hosting the 62nd Annual Festival of Bands Parade. Forty high school bands will compete in this prestigious event. There will be a number of street closures associated with the event that may affect vehicular travel. Street closures will be as follows:
- Baldwin Avenue between Huntington Drive and Naomi Avenue – CLOSED for vehicular traffic from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Duarte Road between Golden West and El Monte Avenue – CLOSED of vehicular traffic from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Campus Drive between Santa Anita Avenue and Holly Avenue – CLOSED from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Residents living south of Huntington Drive, north of Duarte Road, east of Baldwin Avenue, and west of Holly Avenue are asked to use the intersection of La Cadena Avenue and Huntington Drive as the primary entrance and exit from the area. Other residents will be allowed into the surrounding areas with proof of residency.

The answer is not a clear one at all, but rather based on many individual factors about the child and family needs. Attempted Murder Arrest at Arcadia Home

11, 2015 – 7:30 A.M.
On Wednesday November 10, 2015, at
about 10:33 PM, Arcadia Police officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of
South Second Avenue. The call was regarding a possible fight amongst the
residents of the home, and the suspect was armed with a knife. Officers determined
the suspect was holding an elderly woman hostage inside the residence. The
suspect eventually walked outside, and was taken into custody without incident.
Officers went inside, and found the victim suffering from lacerations that were
not life-threatening. Arcadia Fire Department Paramedics provided immediate
medical aid, and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.
The suspect was identified as Michael
James Burbank, a 56-year-old resident of Arcadia. Burbank was charged with violations
of PC 664/187(a) – Attempted Murder, PC 207(a) – Kidnapping, PC 210.5 –
Taking a Hostage, PC 236 – False Imprisonment, and PC 368(b)(1) – Elder Abuse.
Burbank was booked at the Arcadia Police Department and transferred to the Los
Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for housing. Burbank’s bail is $500,000,
and his County Booking Number is 4497739.
This incident is being investigated
by Arcadia Police Department Detectives. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to contact the

Weekly Tip - Lock Your Car...Please!
Limiting the criminal's opportunity and ability to commit a crime is a great step toward crime prevention and doing your best to not be victimized.
In recent weeks, we have had a number of thefts from vehicles reported. A common denominator in these thefts were that folks left windows down and vehicles unlocked. Whether parking in your driveway, garage, or in a parking lot, take the time to Lock Your Car...Please!
Leaving keys inside a vehicle also provides great opportunity to have a car stolen. Convenience is usually an excuse, especially with some newer models with push button starts and proximity remotes, or some who simply toss their keys onto the floorboard.

Annual Appreciation Lunch from the Arcadia Chinese Association
A big "Thank You" to members of the Arcadia Police Department came today in the form of an early Thanksgiving lunch, provided by the Arcadia Chinese Association. Chief Guthrie was joined by members of the ACA and ACA President Francine Chiu for a photo before lunch. ACA President Chiu took a moment to express gratitude to members of the Department and say "Thank You" for our service. Thanks to the ACA for the great lunch and for taking the time to honor members of our Department!
Recurring Road Closure for Downtown Arcadia Street Market
The Downtown Arcadia Street Market is once again a happening spot in Arcadia on Saturdays!
To accommodate the Street Market, First Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Huntington Drive and Santa Clara Streets, from 3:00 p.m. to midnight, on Saturdays.

Weekly Tip - Help Prevent Package Theft!
Are you beginning to order Christmas presents over the phone, via the Internet, or by mail? Chances are that those packages will be delivered straight to your front porch. The majority of deliveries do not require a signature and are generally left at your door, even if no one is home to accept them. This time of year brings out those looking for a crime of opportunity as well as those thieves that actually target your delivery. Thieves will follow or watch for the UPS, Fed Ex or other delivery trucks and then target a home after a delivery is made.
Here are some suggestions for helping to prevent a theft of your packages:
- Use your workplace as the shipping address.
- Track your shipments by phone or on-line so you know what day they should arrive.
- Ask you neighbor to watch for your delivery and then hold the items until you arrive home.
- Keep an eye on your neighborhood and report suspicious persons and vehicles sitting or cruising the area. See Something, Say Something!
- Request a signature delivery option, if available.
- Have the shipment be held at the shipping facility such as a UPS office.
- Utilize a "mailbox" businesses in your town and see if they will accept shipment of your item for a fee.
- If you do not receive your shipment on time, check with the company of origin and confirm the delivery. If the item was delivered and you did not receive it, then report the theft or loss to the original company, the shipping company, and your local police.
These tips are good year round, not just at holiday time!
