Weekly Tip - Spring Brings Out the Wildlife

It's that time of year, Spring is in the air and wildlife are starting to become more active.  As temperatures begin to warm up, residents in the foothills will begin to see more and more wildlife activity.  It's normal to see deer, bears, bobcats, and even the occasional mountain lion in the residential areas of the northern part of Arcadia. 

The City of Arcadia’s proximity to the foothills increases the opportunity for various wildlife to wander into neighborhoods and onto private property. Bears are no strangers to the foothill neighborhoods and the likelihood of bears coming into yards, pools, and trashcans is increased during the warmer months.

Foothill residents should be alert for wildlife in their neighborhoods and take the following actions to reduce activity in their area:

- Secure trash cans in an enclosure if possible

- Harvest ripened fruit from trees

- DO NOT FEED the bears

Make sure to check your yards and closely monitor children to ensure they do not come into contact with bears or other wildlife that might cause them harm.

Weekly Tip - STOP at Blacked Out Signals!

What will you do when you come upon a blacked out or inoperative traffic signal?  California law is pretty straightforward for drivers coming upon inoperative signals at an intersection. STOP! If the signals are blacked out and not working, drivers must treat the intersection as a stop sign. CVC 21800(d)(1) is the section that governs inoperative signals. If there is a Police Officer directing traffic, you must proceed as directed. Otherwise, stop and proceed when safe to do so. Power outages, collision damage, storm-related problems, equipment failure, all can contribute to a blacked out signal. Always be alert, watch ahead, and drive smartly.

2017 Officer of the Year and Civilian of the Year

The Arcadia Police Department and the Arcadia Police Officers' Association (APOA) recently honored two of their own, awarding the Police Officer of the Year and Civilian Employee of the Year Awards.

Detective Charles "CJ" Clark is the 2017 Police Officer of the Year. CJ has been with APD since 2005 and during his Patrol assignments, he worked as a Motor Officer in the Traffic Bureau, a Field Training Officer, member of the APD SWAT Team, and a Firearms Training Instructor. Since 2015, CJ has worked in the Investigations Section as a Property Crimes Detective. During his tenure in Property Crimes, he was the only Investigator assigned to the desk, where he has made the best of a very busy assignment. In addition to working daily cases, CJ assists in managing the BAIT Program to primarily combat package theft. The US Postal Service recently recognized Detective Clark and APD for the continued success of our BAIT Program.

Our 2017 Civilian of the Year is Community Service Officer Jacqueline "Jackie" Logan. Jackie joined APD in 1994 as a CSO, assigned as a Jailer. Over the years, we have transitioned to staffing our jail with an independent civilian contract. Our CSO staff were reassigned to duties in Personnel & Training, Community Services, Court Services, and Investigations. Jackie has been working as APD's Court Officer for several years and is our direct liaison to the Los Angeles County Courts. In addition to her daily duties, Jackie has and continues to train Police Cadets on Court related duties and helping out with paperwork processing duties within the Detective Bureau. Jackie is a "class act" we all count on day-in and day-out, and is well deserving of this award.

Please join us in congratulating both Detective CJ Clark and Community Service Officer Jackie Logan as the Arcadia Police Department and Arcadia Police Officers' Association, Police Officer and Civilian Employee of the Year for 2017.
