Alert Arcadia!

The City of Arcadia's new mass emergency notification system, Alert Arcadia, enables the City to provide important information to you quickly during time-sensitive or emergency situations.

The City will send messages to you primarily in crisis situations, such as fire, earthquake, severe weather, or other similar local emergencies. Messages may include safety alerts and directions on what to do, shelter locations, and evacuation orders.

Once signed up, you will receive time-sensitive messages in ways you customize and specify, including home phone (landline or VoIP), cell phone, work phone, text message, or e-mail.

In addition, if you own an Apple or Android device, you can also view City messages and manage your account settings through a free app called Blackboard MyConnect.

You decide the best ways for the City to alert you and who the City should alert. For example, you may add the contact information of your adult children or relatives, whether or not they live in Arcadia. Alternatively, family members may register directly and sign up for their own Alert Arcadia account.

Weekly Tip - All Fireworks are Prohibited in Arcadia

With fireworks stands popping up in some surrounding communities, we would like to remind everyone, use or possession of any form of fireworks is illegal in the City of Arcadia. In addition to our officers watching for violations, the Arcadia Fire Department will also have area patrols through the 4th of July holiday. Violations may result in arrest or citation, and seizure of all fireworks.

The best and safest source of 4th of July entertainment can be found at a professional fireworks show. Check HERE for a list of shows throughout Los Angeles County (updated annually near the 4th).

Attempted Murder - News Release

Incident:  Attempted Murder

Date / Time of Press Release:  June 25, 2013 – 4:45 P.M.

On June 25, 2013, at about 1:38 PM, the Police Department received 9-1-1 calls with people reporting shots fired in the area of Lovell Avenue just south of Duarte Road. Witnesses reported that the suspect and victim vehicles left the area. A vehicle window had been shot out.

Officers responded to the area and confirmed that a shooting had taken place. The male adult victim later returned to the scene of the shooting. The victim said that he had been standing on the east sidewalk and the suspect stopped his vehicle on Lovell Avenue. The victim and suspect exchanged words, and the victim thought the suspect was about to shoot at him. The victim ducked, the suspect shot at him, and the victim’s vehicle was struck. The victim was not hit by the shots. The motive of this shooting is still under investigation.   

The suspect was described as a male, African-American, with a medium build, in his early 30’s, wearing a dark-colored long-sleeved shirt, and he used an unknown weapon. The vehicle was described as a 2006, black, four-door, Toyota sedan.

This incident is being investigated by Arcadia Police Department Detectives. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to contact the Arcadia Police Department at (626) 574-5151, case #13-2988

Weekly Tip - Speed Trap?

Officers are often asked questions about speeding and speed enforcement. The best answer is to obey the speed limits and you will never have a problem. Too often, drivers feel that because the "flow" of traffic is faster, or "everyone" is speeding, then it is perhaps OK to drive fast. The DMV does a nice job of summarizing and explaining speed limits in California.

A phrase that is often tossed around but not understood is "speed trap". Many drivers feel when a speed limit appears to be posted too low or an Officer is perceived to be "hiding", then this equates to a speed trap - not so. California and Federal law dictate how roadway speed limits are posted. If radar or laser is used for speed enforcement, roadways require speed surveys. Contrary to what a particular website will profess, the usual belief that you have fallen victim to a speed trap is false. Arcadia has many entries on the site and it demonstrates that we are making an impact with high visibility enforcement.
