Road Closure Info - Funeral Services for Arcadia Fire Captain Andy Troncale

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 370 Campus Drive, Arcadia, CA, at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA. To accommodate the expected attendance, associated fire apparatus, and the procession, the following road closures will take place in the City of Arcadia:

Campus Drive

• Closed to all vehicle traffic & parking, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, Holly Avenue to El Monte Avenue. There will be limited access to Campus Drive from Santa Anita Avenue and El Monte Avenue through 8:30 am, to accommodate Arcadia High School (AHS) traffic. Student parking will be allowed on Campus Drive, east of El Monte Avenue, providing the vehicles are parked prior to 8:30 am.

• Closed to all vehicle traffic, 8:30 am to 10:00 am, Holly Avenue to Santa Anita Avenue. AHS may be accessed from Duarte Road during this time.

Santa Anita Avenue

• Closed to all vehicle traffic, 8:30 am to 9:30 am, Duarte Road to Fano Street.

Baldwin Avenue

• Northbound closed to all vehicle traffic, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Huntington Drive to IS 210 Freeway.

Huntington Drive

• Eastbound vehicle traffic toward Campus Drive will be diverted to southbound Holly Avenue, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm.

• Westbound left turn lanes at Holly Avenue closed, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm.

• Eastbound left turn lanes at Baldwin Avenue, Gate 1, and La Cadena Avenue closed, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Holly Avenue

• Northbound closed to all vehicle traffic, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, Fairview Avenue to Huntington Drive.

Park Avenue

• Closed to all vehicle traffic, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, at Campus Drive.

Traffic will be extremely congested during the listed time periods. Use alternate routes or avoid the area during this time, if at all possible. If dropping off a student at AHS, we suggest arriving at least 15 minutes early on Monday. Consider dropping off your student outside the listed closures and allowing them to walk. The closures should not impact pick-up from AHS at the end of the school day.

The road closures and procession will also impact access to the Westfield Shoppingtown between 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. The procession will travel west on Huntington Drive from Holly Avenue, and northbound on Baldwin Avenue. Access to the mall will be limited during the procession.

Alternative routes may include Foothill Boulevard or Duarte Road for east-west traffic, and Rosemead Boulevard or Second Avenue for north-south traffic.

Did you know that the City of Arcadia has over 28 miles in suggested bicycle riding loops? The different loops tour the City and highlight our parks and neighborhoods. You can download the City of Arcadia brochure, Bicycling in Arcadia, HERE. The brochure offers loop maps, safety tips, rules of the road, and information from the MTA on public transportation and bicycles. The State of California Department of Motor Vehicles website also is a good resource with links to bicycle laws and tips.

Before you ride, visit the Arcadia Police Department and register your bicycles. If you are an Arcadia resident, we will register your bike and record the serial number for free. Should your bicycle ever be stolen, this greatly increases the chances of recovery and makes entering the proper information in the statewide database much easier. Many bicycles are booked into property each year that are never able to be returned to an owner. Don't let it be your bicycle sold at auction.

Passing of Retired Reserve Officer Ed Schreiner

Arcadia lost another hometown friend in recent days - Edwin Schreiner(68), known as Ed to many of us, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2012. Ed worked with the Arcadia Unified School District in more recent years and was a Reserve Police Officer with the Arcadia Police Department from 1983-1991. Ed devoted countless volunteer hours within the community, many going to the AHS Marching Band. Going back many years, some may also remember his generosity in working with the Police Advisory Council for Car Clubs (PACCC) and the annual Youth Safety Run, with Ed's Arco at Santa Anita and Foothill.

Our thoughts and condolences go out the Schreiner family. Thank you for your service, Ed - you will be missed.

Farewell to Arcadia Fire Captain Andy Troncale

With heavy hearts, the officers and members of the Arcadia Firefighters Association Local 3440 and the Arcadia Fire Department announce the line of duty death of Fire Captain Andy Troncale. Following a valiant battle, Andy succumbed to the affects of job related cancer on January 23, 2012 at the age of 52. Andy served the citizens of Arcadia with honor and distinction for nearly 30 years. He retired from the Arcadia Fire Department in 2009 after being diagnosed with advanced stage colon cancer...

Weekly Tip - Shop Smart! Watch your Purse and Phone!

Are you an inviting target for a crime of opportunity? In the last few weeks, we have had several unrelated reports of stolen purses and phones from victims who were shopping, or simply not paying attention to their valuables. Phones have been left on sales counters, purses in baby strollers, and wallets on top of coin machines, each have been scenarios for stolen items.

What can you do to help protect yourself? Start by shopping smart. Always be aware of your surroundings and who is near you. Don't become so engrossed in your shopping or check-out that you fail to see the person sliding up next to you or your cart. Never leave your purse or purchased items unattended in a cart, on a counter, or at a table...not even for "just a minute." Thieves will look for easy targets and persons who may be inattentive to their belongings. That open purse or wallet next to you while you are making your purchase is an invitation for theft.

Keep your purse closed. Don't toss wallets and phones back inside without closing the flap or zipper. Check your phones and put them back on your belt, in your pocket, or zipped in the purse. Setting your phone on the counter to continue a sale is an easy way to forget it.

Be mindful of your personal space. If you are "bumped" on the side or someone just happens to slide up close to you, check your wallet or purse and make sure that you have not become the target of a thief.

Watch your cards! Credit, debit, charge cards are easily "skimmed" by use of portable devices meant to quickly capture your card information. Your information can be later transferred to a magnetic strip on a different card and used for theft. The employee should be sliding your card right in front of you. If there is a need to move to a different register, go with them.

Shop smart and pay attention to who is around you! Keep an eye on your valuables and don't invite a crime of opportunity!

Weekly Tip - New Child Restraint Law 2012

January 1st traditionally brings new laws to California and this year was no exception. One law that has a direct impact on many of us is the change in requirements for child restraints in vehicles. Effective January 1, 2012, children under 8 years of age must be properly buckled in a car seat or booster seat, in the back seat of a vehicle. There is an "or" clause if the child has reached a height of 4'9".

Safe Kids Los Angeles County has an excellent website with safety tips for our children, and they offer a printable "parent tip sheet" on the new law. The tip sheet also gives an explanation of the term properly buckled. Parents should also consult the manufacturer and any car or booster seat for proper use and installation. Overnight Parking Permits Required

A reminder that permits are once again required for all overnight parking, 2:30 - 5:30 a.m., in the City of Arcadia. Overnight enforcement was suspended for several weeks surrounding the holidays, however, enforcement began early this morning, January 9, 2012.

Temporary permits can be purchased in the station lobby or online. Annual permits are available for purchase at the Cashier's Office, Arcadia City Hall. For additional information or to download an Annual Permit Application, please visit our website.

Dog Licenses

Licenses are required for all dogs over the age of four months with proof of rabies vaccination. If the dog is spayed, proof of sterilization is also required when obtaining the first license.

Licenses may be purchased on a yearly basis at the Cashier's Office at Arcadia City Hall located at 240 W. Huntington Drive or at the Pasadena Humane Society.

The following are current City of Arcadia license fees:

$30 for non-spayed animals
$15 for spayed animals
$15 for senior citizens with non-spayed animals
$7.50 for senior citizens with spayed animals

Leash Law

When on public property, all dogs must be kept on a leash not exceeding six feet in length. In addition, when walking a dog on a public street or in a public park, you are responsible for the prompt and sanitary disposal of any feces left by the dog.

Passing of Retired Sergeant Eric Akerlind

We were notified of the unfortunate passing of Retired Sergeant Eric Akerlind, who died on December 31, 2011, at the age of 83. Sergeant Akerlind began his career with the Arcadia Police Department in July 1956, and honorably retired in August 1979 - after 23 years of service to the City of Arcadia.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Akerlind family. Rest in peace, Sergeant Akerlind.

We will celebrate New Year's Eve this week and there are a number of things to consider when it comes to celebrating safely. Here are a few things to think about for our New Years celebrations:

•Don't Drink and Drive!

•Use a designated driver, or if need be, call Jan's Don't Drive Drunk Detour Program for a ride home for you and your car. See Jan's Towing website for details.

•DO NOT fire weapons into the air. Bullets and projectiles can travel long distances causing injury and death. You have no control where a projectile will land when fired indiscriminately into the air.

•Stay inside at the stroke of midnight! Celebrate with friends and family indoors.

•Keep an eye on your pets. Loud noises, fireworks, gunshots, all can be frightening to animals. Keep your pets indoors or consult your veterinarian for options. Make sure they are wearing collars with identification should they become lost.

Remember to celebrate safely and smartly. Enjoy the New Year celebration!

Road Closure & Traffic Info for December 26th - Plan Ahead!

The day after Christmas is sure to bring many visitors, shoppers, and racing fans to the City of Arcadia. The Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall will be filled with people seeking sales, exchanges, and returns. The Santa Anita Race Track comes to life once again, with opening day for live racing. Yes, this coming Monday, December 26th, will surely be a busy day in town!

The mall can be accessed off Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive. Shoppers may see gate closures inside Gate 8 (north of JC Penney) and best times for arriving or departing the mall would be earlier in the morning, mid-afternoon, or evening hours, after the race track has closed.

The majority of Race Track patrons leave between the hours of 3:00pm - 7:00pm, so the following closures and restrictions will be in place during that time period:

BALDWIN AVENUE:
- Traffic congestion between Huntington Drive & the 210 freeway
- There will be No Parking on Baldwin Avenue between Hugo Reid and Huntington Drive from 3:00pm – 7:00pm

HUNTINGTON DRIVE:
- There will be No Left Turns from E/B Huntington to N/B Baldwin Avenue (Left Turn Lanes will be Closed from 3pm-7pm)
- There will be No Right Turns from W/B Huntington Drive to N/B Baldwin Avenue (Right Lane Closed from 3pm–7pm)

COLORADO PLACE:
- All Southbound lanes of Colorado Place will be closed at the intersection with Colorado Boulevard (closure in effect from 4pm – 7pm). All traffic will be detoured onto E/B Colorado Blvd towards Santa Anita Avenue.

If you would like to avoid the traffic congestion in these areas, you are advised to use the following alternate routes:

ALTERNATE NORTH/SOUTH ROUTES:

Michillinda Avenue
Santa Anita Avenue

ALTERNATE EAST/WEST ROUTES:

Foothill Boulevard
Duarte Road

Santa Anita Race Track gates will open at 10:00 am and the first post is at noon. Racing fans can access Gate 8 off Baldwin Avenue, however, other gates may be less congested. Suggested routes for easier access may include;

From the west or northbound on Baldwin Avenue, use Huntington Drive to Gate 3 at Holly Avenue.
From the south, use Santa Anita Avenue to Campus Drive for Gate 3 access, or to Huntington Drive for access to Gates 5 and 6.
From the east, use Huntington Drive or Colorado Boulevard/Place to access Gates 5 and 6.

Police officers will be manning traffic signals and certain intersections throughout the day. Traffic will be heavy and you should expect delays. Allow extra time for your travel and please be patient.

Stong Arm Robbery in Mall Parking Lot

A female mall patron was loading shopping bags into her vehicle trunk last night when she was approached from behind by a male suspect. The male forcibly grabbed a computer bag from the victim's shoulder, pulling the bag and contents from the victim. The victim yelled for help as the suspect ran off to an awaiting vehicle. A witness was able to describe the suspect vehicle as a tan, mid-late 90's, possible Acura Integra, with rear tinted windows, and a partial license plate of "6NLG..." CA, or similar. The suspect was only described as a male Hispanic, 20-25 years old, wearing a dark hoodie.

The incident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. in a southern parking lot of the Westfield Santa Anita Mall located at 400 South Baldwin Avenue.

Murder Investigation & Arrest

News Release

Incident: Murder Investigation & Arrest (Update Case #11-6174)

Date and Time of Release: December 21, 2011, 11:00 a.m.

Arcadia Police Officers were called to the food court area of a local strip mall regarding a person having been stabbed, shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, December 20, 2011. The strip mall is located in the 1300 block of South Golden West Avenue. Officers found an 18-year-old male victim inside the food court, suffering from a stab wound to the upper torso. Arcadia Fire Department Paramedics treated the victim at the scene and transported him to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to the injury. In respect for the family and pending all notifications, the name of the victim is not being released at this time.

Preliminary investigation found the victim had been parked to the rear of the location, waiting for an acquaintance working at the food court. Two males, who work at a different restaurant inside the food court, walked out the rear of the location and at some point became involved in a verbal altercation with the victim and another male. The argument ceased when one of the two males from inside pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim. The victim ran toward the food court and collapsed inside. The two suspects made their way back into the closed restaurant, away from the victim’s friends. Officers arrived on scene shortly thereafter, detained all parties, and rendered aid to the victim.

Witnesses identified the two male suspects involved and they were ultimately arrested at the scene. A knife, believed to be the weapon used, was found inside The Money Pot Restaurant where the suspects are employed. The restaurant and food court were closed at the time of the incident.

Arrested and booked on murder charges at the Arcadia City Jail were Juan Lorenzo, age 31, and Jose Antonio Cruz Ramirez, age 26, both from San Gabriel. Their bail is set at $1,000,000.00.

Weekly Tip - Last Minute Shopping? Think about Personal Safety!

Our personal safety is something that we should always be considering, especially when out in public. The shopping season is in full swing and our shopping centers will be packed this weekend. Here are some tips and thoughts on steps you can take to help maintain your personal safety:

•Awareness & Avoidance - Not enough can be said for being aware of your surroundings. It does not matter where you are, at home, out shopping, driving, at the park, DO NOT settle into a fog and become so involved in your task that you fail to look around. Scan the area before you head out. Look around and see what potential threats may be looming. Are there suspicious persons parked by your car? Is there a car approaching slowly from behind? If you see something that makes you suspicious or uncomfortable, walk away, return to the store, and report the activity and your observations to security or store staff.

•Be a Good Witness - If you see a crime or fall victim, be the best witness you can be. Without good suspect descriptions it is difficult for police to conduct follow-up, apprehend criminals, and hopefully, help prevent others from becoming future victims. Basic physical descriptions such as hair color and style, height, weight and build, clothing color and type, suspect vehicle description and license plate, direction of travel, are all things that a responding police officer will ask for. Try and make note of anything specific to the suspect such as tattoos, scars, piercings or perhaps damage in a particular location on a suspect vehicle.

•Consider the Stakes - If this is a property crime and you are in fear for your safety, give up the purse, the wallet, the car. Your personal well-being is much more valuable than your property. Property can be replaced, you can't.

•Make a Scene! - Drawing attention to yourself, and more importantly, to the suspect, can not only deter the crime but also bring forward other witnesses and possibly help. Yell, scream, use a whistle, run away...

•Don't be a Target - Walk with a purpose and look about surveying your surroundings. Carry your keys and whistle in your hand, not buried in your purse. This allows you to immediately open your vehicle, set off your car alarm if needed, or perhaps use the keys to slash at your attacker if you are being physically assaulted. Keep your purse tucked under your shoulder, not dangling down or sitting unattended in a cart.

Business Alert - Phony Fire Inspectors

In November, The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office issued a "Consumer Alert" regarding persons posing as Fire Inspectors targeting business locations throughout the State and County. The Arcadia Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, forwarded this information to the community on several platforms, like that of Nixle and Facebook.

Local businesses in Arcadia were targeted last week, primarily in the downtown area, and we would like to remind our business community to be alert for this type of scam.

In the Arcadia incidents, a man dressed in a blue uniform or jumpsuit with the name "AMG" or "AMG Fire Service" on the clothing, entered the businesses and said he was there to inspect the fire sprinkler system on behalf of the Arcadia Fire Department. The phony inspector was unable to provide business cards or legitimate contact information at the time and was sent away from the business. In another incident, the suspect performed an "inspection" and alleged violations to the employee. The business received a bill in the mail the following day for the alleged inspection service. The phony inspector was described as a light-skinned male, 6'00"/200 lbs, dark hair, 40-60 years old.

Businesses are encouraged to remain alert for this type of scam and to call the police should anyone other than a uniformed, Arcadia Fire Department employee, make any attempt to perform inspections or other related service. Our AFD personnel are uniformed, carry identification, and can be verified by calling AFD at (626)574-5100.

North End Burglary Similarities for December

There have been five reported residential burglaries occurring north of the IS 210 Freeway since December 1, 2011. Four of the five burglary reports list a forced open rear door or window as the point of entry. Loss has ranged from electronic equipment, to cash and jewelry, and even safes. With the holidays approaching, more residents may be home during the day and we encourage you to keep an eye out for suspicious persons or vehicles in your neighborhoods. As you can see from the screenshot from CrimeMapping, residential burglaries near Foothill Boulevard have also occurred in the Pasadena and Monrovia areas.

2011 APD Officer & Civilian Employee of the Year

The Arcadia Police Department and the Arcadia Police Officers' Association (APOA) recently honored two of their own, awarding the Police Officer of the Year and Civilian Employee of the Year Awards. Acting Lieutenant Tom Le Veque was presented the 2011 Police Officer of the Year Award at the APOA Christmas Party and Senior Management Analyst Nancy Chik was presented the 2011 Civilian Employee of the Year Award at the Chief's Annual Christmas Breakfast. Ironically, in 2006, both Tom and Nancy were recipients of these same respective awards under then Police Chief Bob Sanderson. Lieutenant Le Veque is pictured above with APOA President, Officer John Jurman, and Senior Management Analyst Chik is pictured above with Chief Bob Guthrie.

Acting Lieutenant Tom Le Veque lateralled to APD in 1987 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1991. For the last twenty years, Tom has served as a Sergeant in various assignments and was recently asked to step into a temporary role as the Detective Bureau Commander. As an ancillary duty, Tom coordinates the APD social media presence, much of which has been done on his own time. APD has been recognized locally, and at the State and National levels, as an early adopter and leader of social media in law enforcement, much to the credit of Lieutenant Le Veque. Tom is commended for his work and dedication in this evolving field within law enforcement!

Senior Management Analyst Nancy Chik has been with the Department for fifteen years, serving as an Analyst through 2008 when she was promoted to Senior Management Analyst. Nancy has authored and coordinated numerous grants on behalf of APD and helps to manage our budget on a daily basis. Over the course of this past year, Nancy was called upon to work closely with Chief Bob Guthrie after both Police Chief Bob Sanderson and Captain Gene Gioia retired in early 2011. It takes a great deal of behind the scenes work to keep our agency up to date with budgets, reports to various entities, grant requirements, and Nancy played a vital role in assisting Chief Guthrie in this regard. Senior Management Analyst Chik is commended for her dedication and outstanding work this past year!

Overnight Parking Enforcement Suspended for Holidays

Overnight parking enforcement will be suspended for the holidays, effective Sunday, December 18, 2011, through Sunday, January 8, 2012. You will not need a permit to park on the street overnight during this period. Enforcement will resume on Sunday night - Monday morning, January 9, 2012.

All other City and State parking regulations remain in effect and will be enforced.

Chief Bob Guthrie carried out a long standing Arcadia Police Department tradition this morning, hosting the Chief's Annual Christmas Breakfast. The breakfast is a great event where current and former members of APD can gather to share memories and a meal prepared by the Chief and fellow police management staff. In addition to the APD family, all City employees and City staff are invited to attend, along with our elected officials.

There was a great turnout today with well over 200 plates served. A special thanks to Vons, Nichol's Egg Ranch, and Papa Cantella's for the generous donations of food for the event.

Traffic Bureau Holiday Message & DUI Checkpoint Info

The Arcadia Police Department Traffic Bureau reminds you to celebrate responsibly this holiday season and encourages the use of sober designated drivers. More deaths and injuries are caused by impaired drivers than any other violent crimes, including hand guns and knives, combined.

Please remember to regularly water your fresh Christmas trees. This video is a good demonstration of how quickly a dried tree can catch on fire and burn. Other recommendations include: keeping all heat sources away from your tree, choose a fresh tree with green needles that don't fall off when pulled, look for labels indicating the tree has been treated with fire retardant, and use lights designed for indoor use that are in good working order.

Don't Fall Victim to a Distraction Burglary

Last Wednesday, December 7, 2011, the Arcadia Police Department received two reports of ruse or distraction burglaries: one occurring in the 700 block of South Golden West Avenue, and the second, in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue. Both crimes were committed within about 30 minutes of each other, at 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., occurred in close proximity, and the circumstances of each event were similar.

In each occurrence, elderly victims were approached outside of their residence by a lone male who said they needed to inspect the water flow inside the home. The victims allowed the male suspect to enter the home and move freely about the residence, unattended. The suspect told the victims he worked for either a private water company and/or for a homeowners association. Jewelry was taken in both burglaries.

The male suspect was described as either White or Hispanic, 40 years old, 6'-00", stocky or muscular build, and he was wearing a brown jacket and gray pants in one of the burglaries.

Anytime someone approaches you or comes to your residence, obtain identification and confirm their identity. There are legitimate times when a City employee, gas, electric, telephone, or other service worker may require entrance to your exterior property. These persons should be in some form of uniform, have identification, and most likely a marked vehicle. Unless you placed the service call, do not allow anyone access to your home. If the person is suspicious or uncooperative, immediately call the police. Anyone with information should call APD Detectives at (626) 574-5160.

ARCADIANS ARE URGED TO REPORT PRIVATE STORM DAMAGE IN EFFORT TO OBTAIN STATE AND FEDERAL EMERGENCY FINANCIAL HELP

While City and private crews continue to work on windstorm recovery, Arcadia and other cities are tallying the public cost of the early December hurricane-force windstorm. Arcadia’s costs are expected to be in the millions of dollars.

State and Federal emergency agencies could help mitigate the cost of the windstorm, but only if they have accurate damage totals. City and County Officials are urging home and business owners to report their storm-related costs so that local governments can more accurately demonstrate the need for disaster aid. By reporting damage to property, residents and business owners can help the County better assess the impact the winds had on local communities.

Damage reports and cost estimates that are given to the County will be forwarded to the State. It is important that the State and Federal government have an accurate sense of the true cost of this emergency to local governments and private property owners and businesses in order to follow up with disaster relief funding.

Residents should report their storm-related costs to the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management, which is tallying estimates countywide. Windstorm Debris Removal Program

The City of Arcadia has issued a bulletin regarding Windstorm Debris Removal:

"The next phase of windstorm clean-up will begin on Saturday, December 10 at 7:00am. Streets will be

systematically cleared by City and contract crews with one team starting in the south part of town and one in

the north, working toward the middle. Crews will work from right-of-way to right-of-way for 12 hours a day.

Once your street has been cleared, any additional debris is the property owner’s responsibility; the City will no

longer remove debris from the right-of-way.

Please be aware that property owners are responsible for the removal and proper disposal of their debris and

greenwaste..."

Update on Arcadia Windstorm Recovery

December 5 @ 2:42pm - Work on windstorm clean-up continues. The damage in Arcadia is substantial. The City’s Emergency Operations Center was opened early December 1 and a “State of Emergency” has been declared. While much progress has been made in clearing major streets for travel, it will take a considerable amount of time to address all of the power line, tree and traffic signal problems.

The first step once the winds hit last week was to assess the damage citywide and then to get to work on the most critical problems, handling emergency and public safety issues first, followed by removal and clean-up. The Public Works Services Department, along with crews from other government agencies and private companies worked over the weekend and will continue to work on clean-up and restoration, again on a priority basis.

The City is aware that there are still pockets of Arcadia without power. We are in contact with Southern California Edison and have impressed upon them the need to not only restore the power as quickly as possible, but also to provide us and their customers with information about when power is expected to return. If you or someone you know is without electricity and in need of a warm place to stay for a while, or you need to charge cell phones or computers, the Arcadia Community Center will be open tonight (December 5) until midnight as a warming center.

Please be advised that Waste Management will conduct normal trash service on Wednesday, December 7, as long as the bins can be accessed by their vehicles. Your trash, recycling and greenwaste bins should be placed in their usual location. Waste Management will not pick up tree limbs and debris. Removal and clearing of trees not in the public right-of-way is the responsibility of the property owner. If you are hiring a private company to cut or remove a tree, make sure the company is licensed and that they remove all of the debris.

Enforcement of City of Arcadia overnight parking regulations is suspended through the evening of December 9.

Please be aware that fallen power lines are very dangerous. Call 911 to report the line and do not touch it under any circumstances.

There are seven dark intersections in Arcadia at this time. These intersections should be treated as a “four-way” stop.

Wilderness Park is closed until further notice.

Public Works Services Staff will take care of removing and clearing City-owned trees within public right-of-way and are moving as quickly as they can in taking care of this issue. Please be aware that City crews cannot remove trees or debris in the right-of-way if power lines are involved. Edison crews must first ensure it is safe to perform removal services.

The City of Arcadia and surrounding communities are experiencing extremely high winds. The winds are causing power outages throughout the community, along with downed trees, branches, and power lines. The City is currently responding to numerous calls and reports of damage as it comes through.

There is a partial activation of the City of Arcadia Emergency Operations Center and various City Departments are working together to address incidents associated with this wind event.

This is a Public Works Services event with the primary focus of clearing major streets such as Huntington, Baldwin, and Santa Anita. Many roadways are blocked or restricted and City crews are working to clear obstructions as soon as possible.

Southern California Edison is aware of the power outages and is working to restore power.

If you encounter a downed power line – DO NOT TOUCH the line! Notify authorities immediately.

All Arcadia Unified public schools will be closed today December 1, 2011. Schools are closed as a precautionary measure due to potential hazards at campus locations and road closures or hazards.

Due to numerous roadway hazards, the City is asking everyone to remain off the roadways this morning, if at all possible. If you must travel, allow plenty of extra time and be alert to hazards. Treat any signals that are “blacked out” or not working as a four-way stop sign.

Vehicle burglaries are reported to local police throughout the year. However, during the holiday season, mall parking lots and parking structures are packed with vehicles that are sometimes stuffed with presents and packages. Just like presents under your family Christmas tree being an invite for a child's curiosity, your car filled with packages is an invitation for theft and auto burglary. Here are some tips to help prevent you from becoming a victim this holiday season:

•Park in well lighted areas.

•Lock your vehicle and set your alarm.

•If you must leave packages in your car, keep them out of sight. Some stores and malls offer to hold your packages while you shop. Pick all of them up when you are done shopping.

•Do NOT make multiple trips to your vehicle. Thieves watch and wait in parking lots targeting persons leaving items in their cars.

•Be aware of your surroundings! Look about and see who is around when you park.

News Release: Residential Burglary & Pursuit Lead to Arrests

Incident: ResidentialBurglary and Vehicle Pursuit

OnMonday November 28, 2011at approximately 12:54 PM, Arcadia Police Officers observeda male Hispanic exiting a side gate from a residence in the 800 Blk of VictoriaDr. The male was carrying some property,concealed under his jacket, as he ran to an awaiting vehicle being driven byanother suspect. The male got into the frontpassenger seat and the vehicle drove away from the residence. Arcadia Police Officers attempted to pull thevehicle over when the vehicle sped up and failed to yield.

Thesuspects led police on a chase through the streets of Arcadia, San Gabriel, andRosemead reaching speeds up to 70 miles per hour. The suspects ended up crashing into anothervehicle in the City of Rosemead. Allthree suspects were apprehended immediately after the crash. No injuries were sustained by officers or thesuspects. The driver of the other involved vehicle in the crash was transportedto a local hospital with chest pains as a precautionary measure.

Stolenproperty from the residence was recovered from one of the suspect’s person aswell as from inside of the suspect vehicle.

With "Black Friday" upon us, tis the season for thieves to be looking for an easy target. Shoppers everywhere will be crowding stores and check-out counters in search of grabbing bargains and deals. But just as you may be shopping for a gift, the bad guys (and gals) may be shopping for your wallet, credit & debit cards, car keys, or your recently purchased treasures. What can you do to help protect yourself?

Start by shopping smart. Always be aware of your surroundings and who is near you. Don't become so engrossed in your shopping or check-out that you fail to see the person sliding up next to you or your cart. Never leave your purse or purchased items unattended in a cart, on a counter, or at a table...not even for "just a minute." Thieves will look for easy targets and persons who may be inattentive to their belongings. That open purse or wallet next to you while you are making your purchase is an invitation for theft.

Keep an eye on your accounts. Check your balances and statements often. Watch for any unauthorized activity and report it immediately if discovered.

Don't leave valuable items in your vehicle. Do your best not to use your car as a storage compartment. Thieves will target persons who load up their vehicle and then walk away. Keep any items out of plain sight.

Tis the season for celebrations, not for becoming the unfortunate victim of theft. Do what you can to help prevent a crime before it happens! Don't become a victim!

Introducing Social Media to our Emergency Operations Center

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for the City of Arcadia was activated during a mock earthquake drill on Thursday, October 20, 2011. The drill was conducted in conjunction with the Great California ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake and preparedness drill. Participation in this type of drill is not new for the Arcadia Police Department; however, this was the first time that social media monitoring was introduced to the event.

In the event of a true emergency or disaster, it is likely there will be interruptions in traditional communications platforms, such as landline phones and even cellular service. As evidenced by actions after the Haiti and Christchurch earthquakes, community members may very well turn to alternative means of attempting to communicate with public safety and other emergency response organizations. Social media platforms, like Twitter, were widely used by those seeking aid when conventional phone lines did not work. By introducing social media platforms to our EOC operations, the Arcadia Police Department can offer our community alternative access to public safety services during a disaster or large scale emergency. This social media monitoring is in no way meant to replace 9-1-1 or standard methods of reporting to public safety, but rather, to enhance our capabilities to better serve our community.

Current staffing levels and equipment do not allow day-to-day monitoring of social media platforms by our department. This new implementation of potential monitoring will only be used during full-scale activations of our EOC. The primary mission of social media use by the Arcadia Police Department remains community engagement and information sharing, not as an immediate response means of communication. Always dial 9-1-1 to report emergencies or in-progress calls for service.

During this drill, personnel monitored two primary social media platforms: Facebook and Twitter. The Arcadia Police Department accounts on each platform were monitored, along with keyword searches for terms associated with the City of Arcadia and our agency. Other keywords dealing with community specific sites, such as Methodist Hospital, the IS 210 Freeway, and Santa Anita, were monitored and queried. Additional methods and tools were utilized for monitoring Internet traffic to include, “geo-tagged” photos and messages within our community.

The intent of this proactive social media monitoring drill was to better prepare our personnel for our response to disasters or emergencies. Although the social media engagement on behalf of our agency started a little over two years ago, this is the first application within emergency management. Through our presence online, we have been able to build a base of users within and around our community before the need arises. Some of the many benefits to social media participation within emergency management may include: the ability to proactively listen and potentially see problems before they are reported to staff, potential for additional “eyes” on a problem, the ability to assess and verify incoming information, influence rumor control, provide information such as shelters or evacuation points, and to act as an alternative reporting and communications venue.

And, it is not just social media that we have added to our tool kit in the EOC. The Arcadia Police Department also uses the instant messaging service, Nixle, to deliver messages direct to our community and beyond. Nixle allows the department to send emergency, advisory or community alert messages to the subscriber via text (SMS) and/or email. Unlike social media, this form of instant messaging is only for outbound communication, but nonetheless, a valuable tool. Nixle will be used in addition to our social media, as well as the “Alert LA County” call-back program, which targets primarily landline phones within a geographic area.

Introduction of these services to our Emergency Operations Center will only enhance and improve our service delivery in a disaster or large scale emergency. It is imperative to remember though, that public safety resources will be taxed when disaster strikes. Four members of the Arcadia Police Department took their ceremonial oath yesterday during a promotional ceremony held in a packed Council Chambers at Arcadia City Hall. Chief Bob Guthrie officiated at the event, with Mayor Gary Kovacic, Mayor Pro-tem Bob Harbicht, City Manager Don Penman, and well over a hundred family, friends, co-workers, and other members of local law enforcement, in attendance. Each of the promotions was made formal on November 6, 2011, and the ceremony was to celebrate and acknowledge our personnel publically.

Chief Guthrie proudly introduced newly appointed Captains Paul Foley and Larry Goodman, along with Lieutenant Mike Castro and Sergeant John Bonomo. City Clerk Jim Barrows lead the four in the swearing-in and City Manager Don Penman presented each with their new badge. Chief Guthrie spoke about each promotee and their careers, inviting family members to participate in a traditional badge pinning.

Captain Paul Foley began his career with APD as a Police Reserve Officer in 1991. Paul became a regular sworn member of the department in 1994, served as a Field Training Officer and Traffic Detective, and was promoted to Sergeant in 2002. Paul promoted to Lieutenant in 2006 and will now serve as the Uniform Services Division Commander, as Captain.

Captain Larry Goodman began his career as an APD Police Cadet in 1983 and became a Police Officer in 1986. Larry served as a Traffic Officer, Juvenile Detective, and worked as a Community Services Officer. He promoted to Sergeant in 1995 and to Lieutenant in 2007. Captain Goodman is now the Administrative Division Commander.

Lieutenant Mike Castro began his career as a Police Cadet in 1988 here at APD. Mike became a Police Officer in 1991 and worked assignments as a Field Training Officer, Traffic Officer, Fraud Detective, and Community Services. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2008. Lieutenant Castro is currently a Patrol Watch Commander.

Sergeant John Bonomo, like Captain Goodman and Lieutenant Castro, also served as an APD Police Cadet, being hired in 1996. John became a Police Officer in 1999 and worked as a Field Training Officer, Gang Detective, and Community Service Officer. Sergeant Bonomo is now working as a Field Supervisor in Patrol.

This is but a brief look at four great careers and accomplishments of these men. Please join us in congratulating Captain Paul Foley, Captain Larry Goodman, Lieutenant Mike Castro, and Sergeant John Bonomo!

We take them with us and many times, persons are victimized by thieves stealing the laptop. Laptops are stolen from vehicles, dorm rooms, tables in a coffee shop, a hotel lobby, you name it. What can you do to help recover your property? There are companies that offer tracking services to assist in the recovery of stolen computers, both that are fee based and some free. Query "recovering a stolen laptop" or "laptop tracking" online and find the option that is best for you.

The best defense is obviously prevention. Don't give thieves the opportunity to take your property. However, this type of product is like an insurance policy and can possibly help law enforcement in recovering your property.

"Top Sniper" Award in Pasadena Police SWAT Competition

The Pasadena Police Department held their inaugural SWAT Competition at the Burro Canyon Shooting Range on October 25, 2011. Ten SWAT teams competed in the event which raised $5,000 for the South Pasadena Police Department Officer Kevin Sandoval Scholarship Fund. Officer Sandoval, who suffered from an unrelated medical condition, collapsed and died while training at Burro Canyon with his agency earlier this year, in June. Participants, family, friends, and members of the South Pasadena Police Department gathered for a ceremony honoring Officer Sandoval before the competition.

Team members competed in a variety of tactical courses, including shoot courses with movement and physical activity, a rescue drill, sniper courses, and other drills associated with a tactical mission. Our APD sniper team took home the award for "Top Sniper". The SWAT team from Long Beach Police Department took overall honors in the competition.

Have you ordered items over the phone, via the Internet, or by mail? Chances are that those packages will be delivered straight to your front porch. The majority of deliveries do not require a signature and are generally left at your door, even if no one is home to accept them. We are quickly approaching the time of year that brings out those looking for a crime of opportunity, as well as those thieves that actually target your delivery. Thieves will follow or watch for the UPS, Fed Ex, US Mail, or other delivery trucks and then target a home after a delivery is made.

Here are some suggestions for helping to prevent a theft of your packages:

If possible, use your workplace as the shipping address.
Track your shipments by phone or online so that you know what day they should arrive.
Ask your neighbor to watch for your delivery and then hold the items until you arrive home.
Keep an eye on your neighborhood and report suspicious persons or vehicles in the area.
Request a signature delivery option if available, or request the shipment be held at the shipping facility such as a UPS office.
Check with "mailbox" businesses in your town and see if they will accept shipment of your item for a fee.
If you do not receive your shipment on time, check with the company of origin and confirm the delivery. If the item was delivered and you did not receive it, report the theft or loss to the original company, the shipping company, and your local police.

Our personal safety is something that we should always be considering, especially when out in public. The shopping season is quickly approaching and you may be out and about on a more frequent basis. Here are some tips and thoughts on steps you can take to help maintain your personal safety:

•Awareness & Avoidance - Not enough can be said for being aware of your surroundings. It does not matter where you are, at home, out shopping, driving, at the park, DO NOT settle into a fog and become so involved in your task that you fail to look around. Scan the area before you head out. Look around and see what potential threats may be looming. Are there suspicious persons parked by your car? Is there a car approaching slowly from behind? If you see something that makes you suspicious or uncomfortable, walk away, return to the store, and report the activity and your observations to security or store staff.

•Be a Good Witness - If you see a crime or fall victim, be the best witness you can be. Without good suspect descriptions it is difficult for police to conduct follow-up, apprehend criminals, and hopefully, help prevent others from becoming future victims. Basic physical descriptions such as hair color and style, height, weight and build, clothing color and type, suspect vehicle description and license plate, direction of travel, are all things that a responding police officer will ask for. Try and make note of anything specific to the suspect such as tattoos, scars, piercings or perhaps damage in a particular location on a suspect vehicle.

•Consider the Stakes - If this is a property crime and you are in fear for your safety, give up the purse, the wallet, the car. Your personal well-being is much more valuable than your property. Property can be replaced, you can't.

•Make a Scene! - Drawing attention to yourself, and more importantly, to the suspect, can not only deter the crime but also bring forward other witnesses and possibly help. Yell, scream, use a whistle, run away...

•Don't be a Target - Walk with a purpose and look about surveying your surroundings. Carry your keys and whistle in your hand, not buried in your purse. This allows you to immediately open your vehicle, set off your car alarm if needed, or perhaps use the keys to slash at your attacker if you are being physically assaulted. Keep your purse tucked under your shoulder, not dangling down or sitting unattended in a cart.

Halloween Traffic Safety

This weekend and Halloween night will bring plenty of Halloween gatherings. Please pay close attention for pedestrians and little goblins running across the street. Watch out for our kids as they trick or treat on Halloween night from house to house or while getting out of parked cars.

Arcadia, like many communities, has many homes that are decorated and offer "haunted houses" attracting crowds of kids and traffic. When visiting these locations, enjoy the experience but remember to obey traffic laws and parking regulations.

Don't double park or drop off passengers in the roadway.
Don't block driveways.
Don't park in crosswalks.
Don't park in front of fire hydrants.

Please be courteous and respectful of your neighbors. Drive carefully and be aware of all the children celebrating this weekend!

Roving DUI Patrols for Halloween Weekend

The Arcadia Police Department will join officers throughout Southern California this weekend by fielding additional officers targeting drunk drivers. Our Traffic Officers are part of the California AVOID program and APD will be conducting roving DUI patrol on Saturday, October 29, 2011, from about 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Party goers will be out this weekend to celebrate the upcoming Halloween holiday. The Arcadia Police Department asks all to party responsibly and reminds you - Don't Drink & Drive!

Remember, everyone is different and any amount of alcohol consumption can impact your ability to safety operate a vehicle. Designate a sober driver for your evening, plan ahead for a ride home, or take advantage of programs like "Don't Drive Drunk Detour Program" from Jan's Towing. Three Arrested for Residential Burglary After Pursuit

Date and Time ofRelease: October 25, 2011 at 5:00PM

OnTuesday October 25, 2011 at approximately 11:30AM, the Arcadia PoliceDepartment received a call of an in-progress residential burglary in the 00block of E Forest Avenue. A neighborreported seeing three unknown suspects enter a neighbor’s home, stealelectronics, including a flat panel television, and leave in an awaitingvehicle. Arcadia Police Officers spottedthe suspects in their vehicle and attempted to pull them over.

Thesuspects failed to yield and led police on a high-speed chase eastbound on the210 freeway, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph. The suspects exited the freeway at CitrusAvenue in the City of Azusa, lost control and crashed their vehicle intoshrubbery on the off-ramp. One suspectwas apprehended immediately and two additional suspects were captured after ashort foot pursuit. No injuries weresustained by officers or suspects.

Red Ribbon Week 2011

Red Ribbon Week runs October 22nd-30th, 2011. Red Ribbon Week began in remembrance of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena who was kidnapped and murdered in Mexico in 1985. Agent Camarena had been working undercover for the DEA and was key in developing information that led to the eradication of large scale narcotics manufacturing operations in Mexico. Mexican cartel leaders sought revenge for these operations, murdering alleged informants and ultimately Agent Camarena. The Red Ribbon Coalition website gives a well written summary of the history of Red Ribbon Week and offers an excellent tribute to slain DEA Agent "Kiki" Enrique Camarena.

Following his death, in Agent Camarena's home town, Calexico, CA, the public outpouring of support turned in to an organized community response in which citizens dawned red ribbons. They became a voice for prevention in order to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and use of drugs in America. The following year the California State PTA adopted the Red Ribbon Campaign. Then, in 1988, Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationally with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as the Honorary Chairs.

Today, the Red Ribbon Celebration brings millions of people together to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States.

Peace Officer Memorial Dedicated at APD

Retired Captain Randy Kirby and the Arcadia Police Officers' Association presented the Arcadia Police Department with a Peace Officer Memorial plaque at a dedication ceremony held today. The plaque hangs in the entryway of the police station and is dedicated to those law enforcement officials who have died in the line of duty serving the City of Arcadia and our community.

Albert E. Matthies is the only Arcadia Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty. Officer Matthies was gunned down in 1927 near the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Northview Avenue. Officer Matthies was recently honored with a ceremony and honor guard on the anniversary of his death. His name has been placed below the memorial plaque.

About 9 years before the murder of Officer Matthies, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy, assigned to the Sierra Madre area, was gunned down at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue. Deputy Michael Van Vliet was killed on November 18, 1918, by a "Bonnie and Clyde" type duo who had previously murdered two lawmen in Colorado. Deputy Van Vliet was assisting the Pinkerton Agency and the Postal Authority in attempting to capture the duo at a gas station and market in Arcadia when the gun fight took place. The suspects were killed by the deputies, but Deputy Van Vliet also died in the gun battle. His name joins that of Officer Matthies on our memorial.

In conditions like this, it is important to slow down and increase your following distance. The Arcadia Elks Lodge 2025 honored local police, fire, sheriff, and CHP personnel at their annual appreciation luncheon today. In attendance were members from the Arcadia and Sierra Madre Police Departments, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department - Temple Station, Arcadia and Sierra Madre Fire Departments, Sierra Madre Search & Rescue, and the California Highway Patrol - Altadena and Baldwin Park Stations. Representatives from each agency were presented with a charitable donation from the Elks during the luncheon.

We wanted to take a moment and thank the members of Lodge 2025 for the honor, the luncheon, and their continued support of each of the agencies. This is a great event that has been a long standing tradition for our local Arcadia Elks. Thanks again from the men and women of APD.

The better prepared every family and individual is, the better off we will all be in the event of a catastrophic quake. Emergency services are prioritized in the event of a disaster and you may not receive the immediate response from police, fire, medics, public works or any other service that would normally occur on a daily basis. FEMA has a website dedicated to earthquake preparedness and includes topics of what to do BEFORE, during, and after an earthquake. Other websites have earthquake and disaster preparedness lists and are a great resource for preplanning. The American Red Cross has readymade kits available as well. Take the time to research the topic. Discuss options with your family and be ready in the event of a significant earthquake in our area.

Brian Day at the PSN has been following this type of scam and mentions Arcadia in the article from previous incidents earlier in the year. The article serves as a great reminder to be aware of this type of scam. Take the time to talk with older relatives or neighbors, and let them know about these scams. Tell them to always confirm the identity of the caller and immediately follow-up with their families to verify any alleged "problems" before parting with their money. OnSeptember 29, 2011 at about 6:15pm, police officers and Fire Departmentpersonnel responded to the Promenade area of the Westfield Shoppingtown regardinga suspicious item found in a rear corridor. The item had the appearance of a possible explosive device. Several stores were evacuated and a perimeterwas established to keep patrons out of the area.

TheLos Angeles County Arson/Explosive Detail was contacted and they responded toassist. The device was inspected and itwas determined that it was not an explosive. The evacuations were in effect for about 90 minutes.

When it comes to auto burglaries, most cars that are broken into are targeted either because of opportunity or since someone has left valuables in plain sight. Laptops, backpacks, purses, navigation devices, cell phones, all have been taken and are quite often listed as loss in reports. Keep your property out of sight, out of the car, or take it with you. If items of value are left in your vehicle and are readily seen, you are creating a target and inviting a burglary.

Park in well lighted spots with good visibility. Be aware of your surroundings and look around. If you see someone suspicious or an occupied vehicle that looks out of place, note the description and license plate and call the police to report the activity. Don't invite the thief! Don't be a victim!

With school in session, double parking abounds on many roads near our schools. It is not uncommon to stop a parent and have them not understand what "double parking" means. The usual response is that they were "just dropping off" their student. Double parking is the simple act of stopping in a lane of traffic where a parked vehicle is present. Whether you place your car in "park", allow someone to enter or exit your vehicle, or simply are "waiting" on the street; you may be in violation of CVC 22500(h). By blocking the lane or causing other vehicle to slow or stop behind you, may also be the moving violation of Impeding Traffic, CVC 22400(a).

Double parking and allowing a passenger in or out of your car is a safety hazard. This type of violation is a common target of our Video Enforcement Program. Take a look. Pedestrians in the roadway pose a danger to themselves. Help improve traffic safety around our schools and keep our students safe - DO NOT DOUBLE PARK!

September 11th Remembrance Ceremony

Members of the Arcadia Police Officers' Association (APOA) joined the Arcadia Firefighters Association (AFFA) in a September 11th Remembrance Ceremony this morning, honoring those public safety professionals who paid the ultimate sacrifice ten years ago today, September 11, 2001. The ceremony included a roll call of those lost that day our Nation was attacked, an honor guard and wreath laying, a traditional bell ceremony, reflections, song, and prayer.

In attendance were members of the community, members of the armed forces who call Arcadia their home, City dignitaries, and proud members of both the Arcadia Police and Fire Departments, current and retired.

During the ceremony, the AFFA paid special tribute to the FDNY Dean Street Station, Ladder Truck 105, whose station lost seven heroes on 9/11. The Dean Street crew shares the same unit designation as AFD Station 105, Ladder Truck 105, and AFD personnel have enjoyed a relationship with the FDNY crew over the years since 9/11. Photos of the seven FDNY Ladder Truck 105 heroes were displayed at the ceremony.

September 11th Memorial Service

The Arcadia Firefighters' Association (AFFA) will be conducting a memorial service to commemorate the ten year anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001. The memorial service will take place on Sunday, September 11, 2011, at the flag poles of Arcadia Fire Station 106, on the corner of Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue. The service will begin at 6:45 a.m. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks against our Nation. To honor the sacrifice of the public safety officials who perished in the Twin Towers, the Arcadia Police Officers' Association will join the AFFA in honoring all law enforcement and fire fighter personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice that day. A traditional bell ceremony, musical tributes, wreath laying, and a roll call will serve to commemorate the public safety personnel lost, and the strength, resilience and unity of the American people . The event is free and open to the public. A small coffee reception will immediately follow. Parking is available behind the station in the Westfield Santa Anita Mall parking lot.

With school back in session, there is certainly no shortage of parking violations near the campuses. Some of the most common complaints and requests for police service near the schools are related to parking violations. In the rush to drop off a child, it is not uncommon to find parents double parking, stopping in a lane of traffic to drop off or pick up a child, parking or stopping in a red zone, parking well away from the curb because "the trash can" was in the way, blocking or impeding a resident's driveway...you name it, we see it.

Here are a few suggestions to help alleviate the congestion and avoid a parking or moving citation:

•Leave a few minutes earlier and avoid the rush.

•Park a little further away and walk your child to school.

•Obey all parking regulations.

•Follow the school's traffic plan.

•Be patient.

•Keep off the phone and pay attention.

•Set the example, don't encourage unsafe or illegal behavior.

•Be courteous to the school neighbors. It is NOT OK to impede a driveway, even if only for a few minutes.

Weekly Tip - Secure Your Guns

California law requires secure storage of firearms when children under 18 are likely to be present and you are in control of the premises. Definitions and exemptions can be found in Penal Code section 12035, Criminal Storage of a Firearm.

Gun safety starts at home. If weapons are present in a home, children need to be taught proper weapon handling and safety. Weapons need to be properly secured. In the event that a child finds a gun, the National Rifle Association Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program teaches children the following:

•STOP!

•Don't touch!

•Leave the area!

•Tell an adult!

The NRA also offers additional information for parents on gun safety, training and additional information HERE.

There is no excuse for having an unsecured weapon in your home. Gun safes are reasonably priced and are readily available. Use of a gun safe is preferred, but many police departments offer simple gun locks for free. The Arcadia Police Department officers residents gun locks free of charge at our front counter. Check with your local agency for availability.

Arcadia schools start back in session next week: Arcadia High School on Tuesday, August 30th and the elementary/middle schools return on Wednesday, August 31st. The Arcadia Unified School District calendars can be found HERE. This means that we need to be aware of our children during our commutes during the day. Allow extra time for your drive if you pass near a school. Traffic will be heavier than normal during the first few weeks of school as parents grow accustomed to drop-off and pick-up routes for our schools. Be part of the solution, not the problem!

•Slow down!
•Allow extra time for your travel.
•Be alert for pedestrians and bicyclists.
•Don't double park or violate parking restrictions!

Be Bear Aware!

The City of Arcadia’s proximity to the foothills increases the opportunity for various wildlife to wander into neighborhoods and onto private property. Bears are no strangers to the foothill neighborhoods and the likelihood of bears coming into yards, pools, and trashcans is increased during the summer months.

Foothill residents should be alert for bears in their neighborhoods and take the following actions to prevent bear activity in their area:

- Secure trash cans in an enclosure if possible
- Harvest ripened fruit from trees
- DO NOT FEED the bears

Bears are wild animals and should not be approached.

Make sure to check your yards and closely monitor children to ensure they do not come into contact with bears or other wildlife that might cause them harm.
